In a report published in November 2017, Smartling highlights that localization is an important process for companies to expand globally and increase sales in their target markets. The survey results are based on the answers of +300 top marketing decision-makers across the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, and France.

What is localization?

As per the definition found in the Business Dictionary, localization is “the practice of adjusting a product’s functional properties and characteristics to accommodate the language, cultural, political and legal differences of a foreign market or country.” In other words, localization goes beyond translation as it modifies the source content and adapts it in order to be meaningful to the target audience, e.g. by replacing the date and time formats, including business etiquette or values, or choosing more appropriate graphic elements.

An example of a successful localized campaign is “Share a Coke” from Coca-Cola, where labels have been updated with first names or words relevant to each country.

Why is it important to localize?

According to IDG Research, “More than 80% of those surveyed said that content localization is essential to entering new markets, and that this activity is becoming increasingly important to their business.”

Indeed, it is important to keep in mind that only 25% of daily internet users worldwide are English native speakers – Internet World Stats 2017.

In addition:

90% of European internet users prefer to browse websites in their own language and 9 in 10 agreed that all websites produced in their country should be available in the official language(s) of the country – European Commission survey

Even if English is the most frequently used foreign language in the EU, 42% of internet users said they would never buy products if the descriptions are not in their language – European Commission survey.

Worldwide, 72% of customers are more likely to buy a product if the information is displayed in their own language – Common Sense Advisory.

What are the benefits of localizing your content?

Not only will localizing your website or marketing materials show your customers that you respect them, it will also improve their user experience. Customers will be more likely to spend more time on your website and to buy your products. In addition, conversing with your followers in their native language on social media or other communication channels could also increase their engagement and lead to more sales.

71% of the top marketing decision-makers who responded to the Smartling survey agree that sales increase in target markets when content is localized and 74% agree with the statement “Content localization is a revenue driver.”

These respondents also mentioned the below benefits:

Increase in lead generation

Improved user experience of digital interfaces or applications

Increased user/buyer engagement with content

Increased user/buyer satisfaction in target markets

Consistent global brand messaging

Considering that the majority of internet users/customers worldwide are not English native speakers, localizing your content also lowers the risk of being misunderstood and most importantly of offending potential customers – while a marketing campaign can seem amusing in your country, it could deeply offend people from a different cultural or religious background.

And you, will you localize your content?

Based on the Smartling survey, 94% of multinational companies plan to increase their localization spending in 2018. In order to keep up with competition, it seems that most businesses will have to consider the importance of localizing their content in the coming years.

You have probably heard about translation fails that have durably hurt the credibility of renowned brands, affected their sales, and cost millions of dollars to correct the mistakes – “Slave jewelry” from Mango in France, “Turn it Loose” from Coors in Spain, “Pepsi brings you back to life” in China, just to name just a few.

These examples illustrate the importance of:

Localizing rather than just translating

Ensuring that the target content is of excellent quality. It is therefore better to entrust the localization job to a qualified translator, whether internally or externally.

Would you say that localization is also important for your business or organization?

The post Have you considered localizing your content? first appeared on SJ Scribe.

If you are about to become a freelance translator (or other), you most likely have already decided to get a website or blog in order to promote your activity. Wise decision!

But if you made the choice of creating and managing your website/blog yourself, as I did, you should be aware that it does imply a lot of work, a good deal of frustration and even some moments of pure panic when the website crashes after you update your translation plugin and you have no idea how to fix it! Because well… it WILL happen!

I have had quite a few issues on my own over the last few years: layout suddenly getting completely messed up, images disappearing, or even a blank website and admin panel displaying nothing but a fatal error message! As you can imagine, it is quite stressful! And this is what inspired me to write this article. The below is based on my personal experience, and even if I cannot answer all questions – I am a translator and not a WordPress expert – I hope it can save you from massive stress.

Following a few simple steps will buy you some peace of mind.

WordPress

There are quite a few CMS available out there and you will have to try them out in order to choose the one you like most. As far as I am concerned, I took some classes on how to create/manage a website with Joomla, but when the time came to start building sjcribe.com, I actually decided to work with WordPress. Why did I choose WordPress over Joomla? The main point of difference layed in the fact that Worpress has a very active community and support. Since I was a complete beginner with no html knowledge, I decided to play safe! To this day, I do not regret my choice: WordPress is a great tool in terms of website management. It is user friendly and quite easy to learn, pending of course that you have some basic IT skills.

What are the common sense rules to follow when using WordPress?

1. Choose the right template

One of the first task you will have to perform in order to build your website is to get a template. The offer is huge and you will most likely spend hours looking for the one that both matches your needs and taste. A lot of the templates can be customized so do not hesitate to try them out by using the live previews/tests when available.

My advice to you is to get a template that is regularly updated and that offers efficient and responsive support, even if it implies that you must pay for it. Trust me, the investment is worth every penny!

I personally use Karma by Theme Forest for sjcribe.com and Tempera by Cryout Creations for Cessens le Sapenay. I like both. As they are highly customizable, I was able to pretty much achieve what I wanted, with a lot of effort and time, and the need to get my hands into basic html coding. I contacted the support teams for troubleshooting quite a lot during the designing process and they have always been super helpful.

2. Run daily back-ups

When you website is ready, I recommend you to install a back-up plugin and to set-up automatic daily back-ups. You should also back-up your website before performing any change, such as extension update, and ideally save the files into an easy accessible storage. These habits will enable you to restore your website to its previous version in case anything goes wrong.

I opted to UpdraftPlus on both my websites and I am completely satisfied. You can find a helpful video tutorial here.

3. Install and update plugins

If like me you are not an expert in html/CSS coding, you will have to install plugins, whether it is to build a multilingual website, to block spam (useful if you manage a blog) or for back-ups, for example. When you do so, I would suggest you to check 3 elements:

The plugin is updated on a regular basis

The plugin has a good rating

Most importantly, the plugin is compatible with your WordPress version

You will then need to update the plugins whenever available. However, before doing so, make sure that the new version is compatible with your WordPress version. If it is not, then you should start by updating WordPress. Remember that fatal error I was talking about earlier? Well, that is where it came from. I had not paid attention that the latest WPML update was not compatible with the WordPress version I was using… next thing I know is that the website and administration panel crashed right after the update. But fortunately, the WPML support team was able to help me the issue in just a few days.

4. When problems happen

You are done with the set-up and after hours of work your website is finally up and running. What an exciting feeling! But how frustrating when all of a sudden, something goes wrong.

Whatever the issue is, start by trying the below steps:

Ensure you are using the latest WordPress version and if not, update it

Deactivate all plugins and check if the issue remains. If not, reactivate plugins one after the other to identify the faulty one. Make sure it is up-to-date and if not, update it. If problem remains, you should contact the plugin owner for support or install an alternative one.

Restore your website to its previous version

Look online for similar problems and reapply suggested solutions

If none of the above work, then it is time to get help! Based on what happened (you ran a plugin or theme update, the issue is related to images, you get an error message, etc.), you may get an idea of what created the issue. In that case, you should report it directly to the appropriate support team.

If you cannot identify the cause, the WordPress community or support team should be able to help you.

And the reason why you should not panic is that someone will most likely be able to help! This has always been the case for me, and I have had my share of website issues.

5. Check these useful websites

To finish, here is a list of websites that I have found helpful when looking to troubleshoot my website.

Wpbeginner

Lorelle on WordPress

Nathan Ello

WpMultiverse

As I was preparing my trip to the Language Show London, I decided to focus my social media coverage on the United Kingdom for a few days and to provide some perspective to entrepreneurs willing to do business with/expand to the UK.

I preferred to choose a different approach than simply collecting data on the internet, and to provide you with an insider’s view by interviewing Claire Johnston, British marketing specialist with an extensive international experience, and Director of BonBon Communications & Events.

Claire and I met at Procter & Gamble in Geneva, Switzerland in 2008, while she was working as a Marketing and Communications Functional Expert. She has a strong international experience (UK, France, Switzerland and Australia) and has worked across various sectors (FMCG, Not for profit, government and SME), which gives her a good understanding of operating cross culturally and, most importantly, to share some useful information and advice about the UK market.

A few facts about the British market

London is the most important financial marketplace in Europe

In 2015, the UK was the second exporter/fifth importer in terms of commercial services and the tenth exporter/fifth importer in terms of goods (worldwide)

The UK is one of the European leaders for e-commerce (including online sales done via mobile devices): +11% in 2015 and +11% also expected in 2016 (source: IMRG). Average annual spend per e-shopper is €3,625 (source Asendia)

Sectors with a strong potential: Information and Communication Technologies (ICT), biotechnology, aeronautics, defense and renewables energies (source: MOCI)

Despite the Brexit vote, the economic activity seems to have remained quite stable so far. The GDP growth forecast is +1.8% for 2016 and +1% for 2017 (source: BBC).

Perspectives on the UK market by Claire Johnston

Hello Claire. Can you introduce BonBon Communications & Events to our readers?

BonBon Communications & Events is a specialist marketing communications & events management consultancy that I established, following many years being based overseas with the aim of supporting businesses to identify and engage with their customers, locally, nationally and internationally – we offer 4 core areas of support, covering: marketing communications/brand & PR, social media strategy, events & exhibition management and internal communications/employee engagement.

We have worked with clients of varying sizes from start-ups, helping them to build a brand profile, mid-large organisation’s that cover international markets and a global workforce and also those based overseas, helping to introduce new brands into the UK market.

How would you say Brits perceive French and Swiss entrepreneurs and products?

Brits love all things French and depending on industry/product type I would say that style, passion and good taste, would be the assumed perception over reliability and trust.

The Swiss however are known for high quality and reliability, therefore trust.

In either case, I would pay a higher price point for a product based on these perceptions and believe many consumers across the UK would too.

Can you share some basics about the British business etiquette?

Yes of course, Brits are by nature, quite reserved, over polite, apologize frequently (“I’m sorry but would you mind closing the window”) and over explain themselves.

However generally in business, Brits are honest, to the point and can be trusted to have high levels of integrity, with a ‘have a go’ attitude to get things done, even if it means skipping lunch, existing on copious amounts of milky black tea (which is lost on the French).

What are the must-know in terms of communication in the UK?

British communication style is a mix of direct/indirect which can be confusing x-culturally, the best thing to remember is KISS – Keep It Simple Stupid. i.e. keep written work and presentation material short, concise and to the point, particularly when presenting data but also to avoid the key messages getting lost.

Don’t be afraid to inject a little humor, as this is often appreciated by the British, however be careful to ensure that you understand the meaning of any attempt, to avoid embarrasment.

Would you say that good written communication is important to do business in the UK? Why?

Yes, absolutely, it’s vitally important that any companies that are looking to start doing business in the UK, thoroughly research their market/target audience to ensure that their marketing messages don’t get lost in translation – what’s relevant in one market, might not be in another.

Therefore it may be necessary to adapt and take a different approach to ensure success.

Has any success story been inspiring you?

I am constantly amazed at how many entrepreneurs are out there, every day developing their ideas into a business or new brand and quite often not getting the publicity they deserve.

One story that really inspires me, is the growth of Micro-scooter’s in the UK. 10 years ago, anyone that had spent time in Switzerland would know this brand as most children, even tiny kids could be seen on the sturdy 3 wheeled frame, my own daughter had one aged 3 and I constantly used to go on about how innovative and unique these products were, in comparison to those seen in the UK. As it was, around the same time, a mum in Clapham, London, happened to have the same feeling and decided that the UK should have these products, so her and a friend contacted the head office in Switzerland and became UK distributors (with very little experience) 10 years on, with the company using a mum ambassador strategy, which clearly works, these scooters can be seen virtually everywhere and the company is a super success story with over 1 million sold in the UK to date.

Would you have some advice for entrepreneurs willing to expand to/reach the UK market?

The most important thing is to thoroughly research your market and the competition, why would your product work, is there a gap?

Then research your target demographic, spend time on the ground and consider using a local partner who understands the UK market to act as an advocate for the brand and develop the messaging you need on a local level.

Exhibitions are a fantastic way to meet buyers F2F and also key trade publications, so consider attending relevant shows, both as a form of research, but also as an exhibitor.

Who should foreign businesses turn to when first approaching the UK market?

The UK government has a UK Trade & Investment department that can help support businesses that are looking to start doing business in the UK. I worked for this department when based in Australia, it does come with a cost, but could be a great way to research the opportunities.

My own business has also been established to help support new businesses on a local level and I have recently been working with some overseas companies not yet seen in the UK, developing brand strategy and distribution opportunities here in the UK. www.bonboncommunications.com

SJ Scribe’s first three years

July 1, 2013, marked the beginning of an exciting journey!

Making the decision to study writing and translation while working in marketing at Wella (Procter & Gamble) demanded a lot of efforts and hard work, but how rewarding to finally be able to launch my own freelance translation activity in July 2013! Of course, doing so at the very beginning of summer – and school holidays – may not have been the wisest decision but I did not want to wait any longer. I had been dreaming of this project for so many years… I was ready to embrace this new challenge. And maybe it was not such a bad timing after all, as I quickly started to receive some translation projects.

Following the advice of my studies counsellor, a renown translator, I took my exam a few month later, in January 2014, one year earlier than initially planned. This turned out to be a very important step in my journey as a translator: passing the exam with a Merit distinction, I gained full confidence in my translation skills and understood that I was completely legitimate in the profession.

2014 was also amazing in terms of work projects as I translated internet pages for the world-famous brand Garnier and discovered the world of luxury horology with Patek Philip, which remains a great memory to this date.

The following year turned out to be quite challenging and I had to face a long period of uncertainty. Reserved by nature, I then fully grasped the difficulty of selling my activity and finding new clients. Although aware of the importance of promoting SJ Scribe, hence myself, I did truly hope that my business network and recommandations would suffice to grow my freelance activity. It did not! I only had but one choice: to be proactive and work on a marketing strategy. I was helped in that matter by a few experts I met during sales and marketing workshops specifically designed for new entrepreneurs and where I have learnt some basic and useful sales practices.

Fortunately, 2016 started on a much better note and I gained a new brand image, an improved website, new international customers, ongoing translation projects and a promising future in the translation industry. So I do feel like celebrating SJ Scribe’s third birthday, as it represent, in France, a very important milestone in the life of a company in terms of sustainability.

Birthday special offer -10%

And therefore, because SJ Scribe could have not been successful without your support and trust, I would like to say thank you by offering a 10% discount on all translation projects of 50€ or more.

Do not hesitate to seize the opportunity to translate your business documents!

Terms and conditions

The birthday special offer is valid for 1 occurrence, from July 1 to September 30, 2016

Please mention the “SJScribe-OS10-2016″ code when contacting SJ Scribe

The discount applies to translation projects worth 50€ minimum

The discount does not apply to French writing jobs or proofreading

The post Channel Islands NP California – Part 2 first appeared on SJ Scribe.

Background

Early fall 2014, a few friends of mine asked me to help them conquer the American West! As they do not speak English and were not keen on choosing a travel agency tour, they decided they would rely on my Californian experience and language skills. This is how I found myself becoming a travel agent, even just for a short time.

Browsing the web for French translations

My first mission was to create a tour that each of my friends would enjoy, taking into consideration everyone’s personality and needs but also technical challenges (long distances, travel times, etc.). This turned out to be easier than I thought and I soon came up with a classical tour, perfect for a first trip in that part of the USA.

As I mentionned earlier, my friends do not speak English. Therefore, I needed to find translated brochures and websites of the places I included in our trip, so that they could check and validate my choices.

Knowing that the number of French people travelling to the USA had been constantly increasing over the past few years (another +8% in 2014 according to the Office of Travel and Tourism Industries) and that French visitors particularly enjoy the American West, I assumed it would be easy to find French translations. Well, hours of browsing the internet brought me to that conclusion: most of American touristic stakeholders do not bother offering their visitors a translated version of their brochures or website – or at least a decent and understandable one. A pity in my opinion!

Translating brochures and websites of the American West

But my friends are lucky – before being a US specialized travel agent, I am most of all an English to French translator!

I carefully picked a set of documents related to the places we would visit and I translated them with the same degree of professionalism I would offer to one of my clients. Even though I was not getting paid for the job, this would be an excellent exercice. As all translators know, providing high quality translations require constant practise.

Why post my translations online?

We finally took off for Los Angeles at the end of April this year. Throughout our trip, I realized that statistics were true: there was so many French speaking tourists that it was almost unrealistic. We met French people everywhere we went to – from every street corner to every stop in the deserts. Like my friends, a lot of these tourists struggled understanding information provided in English only – but unlike them, they did not have a translator guide!

So I thought that my work could help other travellers and I decided to add it to my blog project. I do hope it will be useful.

Touristic translations… and more

I will add these translations little by little in the “touristic translations” category, along with a PDF version – Please feel free to download them to prepare your trip.

And because I do not only translate touristic documents, I will also offer other type of translations once in a while, based on my fields of expertise.

Please do not hesitate to suggest topics by leaving a comment.

The post Free translations online first appeared on SJ Scribe.

The post Channel Islands NP California – Part 1 first appeared on SJ Scribe.

Cessens le Sapenay website

This is now official, Cessens le Sapenay is online! The website is available in French and in English.

So check it out and share with your friends!

The story behind the Cessens website

Cessens is a charming little French village that I know pretty well since this is where I grew up. This is a place that I truly enjoy for its authenticity and its relaxing yet dynamic atmosphere. This is a place that I believe is worth knowing.

A long time ago, a country festival was organized every summer on the Sapenay hills, attracting both locals and tourists eager to experience French festivities and food. But after more than 20 years, the festival was cancelled and tourists stopped coming to the village, with the exception of free-flight amateurs. For the first time, I imagined how nice it would be to get Cessens a website and share it with travellers from all around the world.

I soon moved to the United States and forgot about this lovely idea.

Many years later, I moved back to the area and began to work as a freelance translator. In need of a website to promote my business, I trained myself on WordPress and created sjscribe.com. And I remembered: I once wanted to build a website dedicated to my home village. Since I now had the required skills, why not do it? I presented my ideas to the Mayor, who turned out to be quite enthusiastic. And so, the project was launched.

Many people have been collaborating by sending me pictures and useful information. I am truly thankful for their involvment – Thanks to them, the website is now online!

Cessens le Sapenay

As I already mentioned, Cessens is a charming little village from the Savoie area, located above the Lac du Bourget. It is a peaceful place, inviting people to relax and enjoy the moment. But it also offers great outdoors activities such as paragliding, hang gliding, rock climbing, etc.

All the available activites are described on the website.

I invite you to check it out online and then come for a visit. I am sure you will enjoy it, whether you prefer an active vacation or a more relaxed one.

What about your project?

You may want to promote your town or touristic business in French speaking countries and make your website information available in French. If so, I would be happy to work with you, as I particularly like this kind of projects.

Please check the services I provide and the rates I offer. I am also available to answer your questions and provide a personalized cost estimate.

The post Cessens le Sapenay is now online! first appeared on SJ Scribe.
